Promotion vs. Prevention
AgileBrain measures both positive and negative emotional needs, often referred to as promotion needs (“wanting more of the good”) and prevention needs (“wanting less of the bad”). AgileBrain does so by exposing you to both positive and negative images that are validated to correspond to each emotional cell. The tables below show those positive and negative emotional needs.
Our emotional needs exist in relation to each other. Fulfilling those needs can be facilitated by understanding their relationship to other needs.

Bottom to Top
If I am anxious about my situation (Insecurity), I may choose to withhold, rather than express my true self (Conformity), making me feel unable to grow and develop (Limitation)!
Top to Bottom
One feels developmentally stunted (Limitation) if one feels forced to “fit in”, rather than to express one’s true self (Conformity) because one doesn’t feel comfortable (Insecurity).*
*Coaches should be alert to their client’s emotional state and follow ICF guidelines for referral to other mental health professionals.

Bottom to Top
If I am prevented from owning & controlling my work (Disempowerment), I may simply “punch the clock” rather than fully committing (Stagnation), making it very unlikely that I will succeed (Failure).
Top to Bottom
One feels a sense of Failure if one feels prevented from becoming absorbed in your work (Stagnation), due to being in a role that limits control over inputs or outcomes (Disempowerment).
Bottom to Top
If you feel like part of a community (Inclusion), you can feel cared for and caring toward others (Caring) and if you can live that caring, then you can be admired for your contribution (Recognition).
Top to Bottom
How could one achieve (Recognition), if one had no mutually supporting relationships (Caring), and how could one experience caring if one didn’t at least feel a part of the group (Inclusion)?
Bottom to Top
If I feel socially isolated (Exclusion), I will probably have few opportunities for close, supportive relationships (Uncared for), making me feel shunned by the community (Scorn).
Top to Bottom
One feels ostracized (Scorn) if one has limited supportive relationships (Uncared for), because I feel that my environment is unfair (Injustice)…
Spiritual Domain
Bottom to Top
f you feel that your world is fair & just (Justice), you can trust that the system you are in will consistently do the right thing (Ethics), providing a secure scaffold for finding greater meaning in life (Purpose)
Top to Bottom
How could one achieve one’s greater mission (Purpose), if one can’t rely on leadership to exemplify moral behavior (Ethics), and trust that right will be rewarded and wrong will be punished (Justice)?
Bottom to Top
If I feel that my environment is unfair (Injustice), I expect to experience moral lapses around me (Wrongdoing) and that material gains will be pursued at the expense of higher principles (Materialism).
Top to Bottom
One feels caught up chasing short term rewards (Materialism) in a system where actions are not values- based (Wrongdoing) because the system lacks just foundations (Injustice).
