The Connection Craving state is defined by a deep longing to belong, to be invited in, and to feel part of something, coupled with a heightened fear of being left out or pushed away.

AgileBrain identifies this state as emotionally charged by vulnerability around belonging. The core message is: Please don’t forget me. Please let me matter to you. There’s openness and yearning—but also fragility. Small signs of being ignored or excluded can feel emotionally outsized, triggering retreat or overreach.

This state can lead to efforts to reconnect—sometimes clumsy, sometimes intense—or to a protective shell of detachment. Either way, the underlying emotion is the same: a hunger to be included and a fear of being cast aside.

To support this state, offer genuine welcome and consistent signals of inclusion. Avoid sudden silence, abrupt changes, or dismissive tones. The more belonging feels secure and ongoing, the more people in this state can settle emotionally and show up with their full hearts.

How to Approach & Probing Questions

A key to effectively working with clients experiencing Connection Craving is to recognize their longing for human contact, appreciation, and validation. Getting them involved in in-person, group work will speak directly to their primary social needs and help to lower their level of worry. People in this state are not satisfied with the status quo and are willing to take action so they will likely need no convincing that a plan of action would be helpful. Weaving their plans into a social context should be extremely effective in creating a virtuous cycle of motivation and action.
